Description Ushering in Lunar 2006 with “Spring in Atlanta Performing Gala” Chinese Lunar New Year's Day is definitely the most celebrated festival in the world. It is considered to be the most important holiday for the Chinese as well as ethnic groups such as the Mongolians, Koreans, the Miao and the Vietnamese, who were influenced by Chinese culture in terms of religious and philosophical worldview, language and culture in general. For many Chinese here in Atlanta, one of the traditions of the festival has been for family members and friends to gather together and enjoy the “Spring in Atlanta (SIA)” Performing Gala. Rendered possible by three prestigious Chinese organizations in Atlanta, Association of Chinese Professionals (ACP), T.M. Center for Culture and Arts (TMC), and Cathay Atlantic Art Ensemble (CAAE), this unique celebration will continue to extend happiness and blessings to the Asian American community Saturday, February 5, 2006 at 3:00pm at the Atlanta Civic Center. This year, the famous Chinese pop star CHEN Fangyuan will join the performance. CHEN Fangyuan’s sweet and pure singing style made her one of China’s top pop stars since the eighties. In 1977, she was admitted by the China National Conservatory of Music, majoring in Er Hu (Chinese two-stringed bowed instrument). In 1981, she debuted as a pop singer on the Beijing stage and became one of the most popular stars of the time. Since then, CHEN Fangyuan has released 10 albums and has been invited frequently to perform with world famous artist such as MIREILLE MATHIEU, UDO YURGENS and ????, throughout Europe, North America and Asia. In 1998, she introduced the world renowned broadway show “Sound of the Music” onto the Chinese stage. With her marvelous performance as “Maria”, the show became an instant hit. In 2001, she was invited to the “Grammy” for her contributions to the world music industry. Another shinning star in 2006 “Spring in Atlanta” performance gala is Mr. Wei Dongsheng, a leading dancer in Atlanta Ballet and the director of T. M. Center of Culture and Arts. He will assume the responsibility of general director and stage supervisor again. As a talented artist himself, Mr. Wei has danced leading roles in ballets such as The Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, and The Nutcracker. Atlanta’s local professional artists will gather together once again to bring to the audience their original music piece, dance, drama mosaic and comic short sketches. The evening will offer us a fascinating combination of traditional and contemporary artistic performances, including singing (solos, chorus, "chained singing"), dancing (classical dances, children dances, modern dance and ballet), instrumental music, string orchestra, acrobatics, short acts, pantomime, excerpts from Peking operas and other local operas. The performing artists are famous dancers from Atlanta Ballet, a youth string orchestra formed mostly by violin students from Xiaohong Gong Violin Studio, a prestigious percussion group from Atlanta, dancers from many music and art groups and schools in the metropolitan Atlanta area such as AnFang Dance Troupe, Atlanta Professional Ballet School, Cathay Atlantic Art Ensemble, etc. This is going to be a magnificent gathering of brilliant stars of artistic talents. The Atlanta Civic Center has, for more than three decades played host to some of the world's most highly anticipated productions. Its performance stage is the largest in the Southeast making the Civic Center the venue of choice for a lot of major productions. This year with the added feature of surrounding-sound, audiences will be able to admire the high level art show as well as to enjoy the luxury and comfort of the theatre’s facility.
